Dr. Lando provided evidence in the context of the Committee’s inquiry into the fitness for purpose of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in the changed political, social and economic landscape of the 21st century. Dr. Lando’s contribution to the inquiry focused on the settlement of international disputes under the Convention, especially conflicts of jurisdiction and advisory opinions. Dr. Lando has published before on advisory opinions under the Convention, a topic which has come under public scrutiny after the recent creation of a new international organisation, the Commission of Small Island States, empowered to request advisory opinions under the Convention concerning the international law of climate change. Dr. Lando written his evidence with Dr. Niccolò RIDI of King’s College, London.
