Professor Wang Jiangyu appointed Director of RCCL

We are pleased to announce that Prof. Wang Jiangyu (Professor, School of Law) has been named the new Director of the Centre for Chinese and Comparative Law (RCCL), effective 1 February 2020, replacing Dr. Chen Lei (Associate Professor, School of Law).

Prof. Wang obtained his LLB degree from China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL) in 1994 and LLM degree from Peking University in 1997. From 1999 to 2003, Prof. Wang studied law in the United States and the United Kingdom and subsequently obtained another LLM degree from the University of Pennsylvania, the MJur degree from Oxford University, and the SJD degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

Prof. Wang is qualified to practice law in the People’s Republic of China and New York State. He worked in the Legal Department of Bank of China between 1997 and 1999 and Chinese and American law firms. He served as a member of the Chinese delegation at the annual conference of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL)

Conference in 1999. Besides, he has been an invited expert/speaker for the WTO, International Trade Centre (UNCTAD/WTO), UNCITRAL, and United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP). He is also a member on the Governing Council of the WTO Institute of the China Law Society and that of the Chinese Society of International Economic Law.

Prof. Wang started his academic career at the Faculty of Law of National University of Singapore (NUS Law) in 2003 as an Assistant Professor. He was on secondment as an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), where he directed the research programme for MPhils and PhDs and taught courses on international economic law and Chinese law. In 2007, he received CUHK’s 2007/08 Young Researcher Award. He returned to NUS Law in 2009 to become a tenured Associate Professor of Law. He was the founding Deputy Director of the Centre for Asian Legal Studies (CALS) of NUS Law from 2012 to 2016, and served as the Director of the Asian Law Institute (ASLI) in 2019-2020.

Prof. Wang’s teaching and research interests include international economic law, international law and international relations, comparative law, company law, securities regulation, and law and development in China. He has authored and edited several books and published extensively in English and Chinese academic journals on a variety of law and politics related topics, and is a regular contributor to leading newspapers and magazines in Singapore, Hong Kong, and mainland China. He has also served as an external reviewer for dozens of international journals, publishers and research funds.

Prof. Wang has extensive journal-editing experience. He is currently a Joint Editor-in-Chief of the Chinese Journal of Comparative Law (CJCL) published by Oxford University Press. He was a Joint Editor-in-Chief for the Asian Journal of Comparative Law (AsJCL), published by Cambridge University Press, from 2012 to 2016, and served as its Executive Editor from 2016 to 2019. He also sits on the editorial board of several internationally refereed journals on international and comparative law.

With Prof. Wang’s rich experience and expertise in Chinese law and comparative law, we are confident that under his leadership, RCCL will further achieve its goal of promoting and facilitating Chinese and comparative law study and research, hence further enhancing its reputation and influence in the Asia Pacific Region and internationally.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Chen Lei, who will continue to serve as an RCCL core member, for his leadership and all the contributions he has made to RCCL in the past two years.

New Core Members and Associate Members

Apart from directorship, there are also changes in RCCL core members and associate members from 1 February 2020.

As far as core members are concerned, in addition to the new Director Prof. Wang Jiangyu and five existing core members (namely Dr. Chen Lei, Dr. Ding Chunyan, Prof. Lin Feng, Dr. Lin Yu-Hsin and Dr. Wang Shucheng), Prof. Liu Qiao will also join this 7-person team which is responsible to assist the Director in making important decisions for RCCL.

As to associate members, three professors of our Law School, namely Prof. Julien Chaisse, Prof. Wan Wai Yee and our School of Law Dean Prof. Tan Cheng Han, have accepted our invitation to join us.

We welcome all new members to our RCCL family and look forward to working together on future RCCL projects and activities, hence continue to contribute to research and study relating to various aspects of Chinese and comparative law.
