Community Services

Community Engagement Programme

Community Engagement Programme (CEP) of Student Development Services, a platform that bridges CityU students with the community and engage them in a variety of service-learning experiences, has organised online services since April 2020. CEP’s first online service was “Experiment At Home”. With the assistance of CityU staff in preparing materials and liaising with different social welfare groups, student volunteers prepared bilingual experiment kits for underprivileged families, allowing the children to relieve boredom and learn science in a fun way, while enhancing parent-child relationships. Through the online service, student volunteers were able to increase their awareness and understanding of the society and nurture a caring spirit for the needy. As Kathy Lai, one of the student volunteers says, “It was a great opportunity to foster personal growth and self-reflect on the consolidated learning experiences”.

Besides, CEP has held a number of non-face-to-face community services for different target groups. They include hotline and online support for children, secondary-school entrants, teenagers and the underprivileged elderly; service-learning activities via live webcasts to enhance the public understanding of the situation of disadvantaged groups; interactive storytelling, lantern making and game services for low-income families via video calls; DIY handicrafts and online community tours for the elderly. More than 250 students participated in the services with a total of over 2,900 online service hours and 850 service recipients. Each of the online public education events via live broadcasts even attracted over 1,000 views. Student participants all expressed that they served the society in novel and unexpected ways.

Servant Leadership Training Programme

To promote the importance of wellness and fitness concept to the deprived children amidst the pandemic, Servant Leaders from Wellness Transformer Team of Servant Leadership Training Programme (SLTP) successfully organised an online service for 13 children who live in Wong Tai Sin in July and August 2020. Servant Leaders designed a variety of fun and creative games which focused on the theme “emotion” to help the children relieve the anxiety of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, to develop a close and deep relationship with the elderly, Servant Leaders from Food Friendster Team of SLTP also organised a wrap-up service for the elderly who are receiving food assistance in September 2020. 10 elders experienced an online gathering via Zoom with Servant Leaders. Servant Leaders organised interesting online games and presented life storybooks to particular elders. They felt warm and expressed gratitude to our students.
