With the pandemic severely disrupting global economies and the job market, OVPSA has coordinated a series of employability enhancement support to maximise fresh graduates’ employment experiences and job landing opportunities.
In June 2020, CityU has unveiled Career Launch Scheme (CARLS), designed to maximise employment opportunities of Class of 2020 by matching job-seeking graduates with employers. One-third of graduates’ monthly salary capped at HK$6,000 per month will be matched for a maximum of three months. Over 16,780 industry partners, employers, alumni and trade associations were contacted. Over 1,870 job opportunities from different industry sectors were solicited. Graduating students were notified via SMS to access an online platform, JobPlus to acquire information on job vacancies. Our career consultants conducted more than 2,000 one-on-one online career consultations with Class of 2020 to provide personalised career advice.
Companies successfully recruited 2020 CityU graduates through CARLS include Swire Resources Limited, Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings Limited, FundingReach Holdings Limited, Lai Sun Development Company Limited, Joint Publishing (H.K.) Company Limited, The Hong Kong & China Gas Company Limited and The Jardine Engineering Corporation.

With face-to-face interviews, job seminars and career workshops on hold, CityU has been embracing virtual solutions to help students transit from education into employment. During Career Month held between 25 May and 19 June 2020, more than 60 training sessions were organised, including special seminars on facing adversity and job opportunities on social media, career preparation workshops, sessions on job search skills and recruitment talks. Overwhelming support from employers was received, including Microsoft HK Limited, KPMG, Citibank N.A. Hong Kong, New World Development Co. Ltd. and Chun Wo Construction. Over 2,000 students participated in the event to actively prepare for their career development.

Building on the successful experience of Career Month and other career support initiatives, Career and Leadership Centre (CLC) of Student Development Services organised the E-Career Success Fair 2020 from 21 September to 31 October 2020. The online career fair, via Zoom and applicable online platforms, featured new initiatives including Job Expo with “Live Sessions — Connect with Employers”, Job Search Skills Sessions with Executive Chatrooms, Thematic Workshops and Student Sharing Sessions. Same as Career Month, students were able to join Career Preparation Workshops with CV polishing service and Recruitment Talks. With more than 150 activities and nearly 110 virtual company booths, over 13,190 participants were attracted to join the Fair. Through the online career fair, students could know more about different industry sectors and build relationships with employers.
The Fair received tremendous support from over 130 multinational corporations and large institutions from various sectors. Participating employers include Amazon Web Services, Ernst & Young, Hang Seng Bank, Hong Kong Productivity Council, Hong Kong Trade Development Council, IBM China/Hong Kong Limited, Jardine Matheson Limited, New World Facilities Management Co. Limited, PwC and Swire Properties Limited. Over 1,500 job vacancies were available from the Fair.

With Covid-19 responsible for the cancellation of overseas summer internship programmes, CLC transferred Global Work Attachment Programme (GWAP) online for the first time, which connected over 20 students with employers in Berlin, Munich, Sydney and Taipei for 6 to 8 weeks of work experience. Students used video call, project management software and email to communicate and interact with the employers to complete assigned tasks. With remote working likely to be a lasting legacy of the pandemic, the students benefited from the experience and appreciated the first-hand opportunity to participate in an important “future of work” trend. The employers also reflected that CityU students have a high level of working capabilities and expressed the hope to continue the cooperation.
Golden Key Club of Student Development Services, a platform for scholarship recipients to get connected to each other and share success stories, organised 4 sessions of online interview simulations, namely Be the Captain Marvel in the Interview: Practice Time!, in March 2020. It was an online interview simulation game consisting of a job interview and a scholarship interview for participants to gain valuable interview experience and insights from professionals and consultants.
SPECIAL Hall Night Talks are special monthly talks organised by Student Residence Office, providing a dynamic and quality learning platform for student residents to meet and talk with renowned elites in the society, in which guests will share their keys to success in different areas. Due to the development of the pandemic, three SPECIAL Hall Night Talks were conducted via Zoom by the renowned entrepreneurs to share their valuable experiences to hall residents. A total of about 320 participants attended the talks and learned useful information about the workplace.
