Congratulations to the College of Science’s Graduating Class of 2025!
With an increasing number of Chemistry graduates completing their journey this year, including the first graduate from the College of Science’s (CSCI) flagship programme, Global Research Enrichment and Technopreneurship (GREAT), CSCI proudly arranged two Commencement sessions for the Graduating Class of 2025. The first session was exclusively for the Department of Chemistry, and the second was for the Mathematics and Physics Departments. Delighted guests filled up the hall and even the balcony.
Presided by Professor Xin Wang, Dean of CSCI, both Commencement sessions were warmly held on 10 June 2025. Over 300 graduates and about 500 parents and guests attended the two sessions to share the joy of graduation, with the witness of faculty members on stage.
In the Department of Chemistry session, the College has invited Dr. Steve Chuang, Chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries (FHKI), as the Guest Speaker. Dr. Chuang shared in his speech that “science is not just about theory and knowledge. It is a way of thinking and a powerful tool for solving real-world problems.” He also encouraged the graduates that “If you dare to innovate and are willing to try, opportunities will come your way.”
For the Mathematics and Physics Departments session, our Dean first presented the CityUHK Teaching Excellence Award 2024/25 to Prof. Condon Lau from the Department of Physics. He is the first recipient of CityUHK’s Teaching Excellence Award for Digital Learning.
The College is honoured to have the recipients of the College of Science Distinguished Alumni Awards flying back from New York and Beijing as Guest Speakers. Prof. Jingchen Monika Hu, an alumna from CityUHK’s Department of Mathematics and currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at New York’s Vassar College, encouraged the graduates to “be creative when developing your career trajectory and pay it forward to younger students and colleagues whenever you can”.
Prof. Shan Guangcun, an alumnus from the Department of Physics and now a Professor in the School of Instrumentation Science and Optoelectronic Engineering at Beihang University in Beijing, recalled his memories at CityUHK, “I learned that physics isn’t just about laws and equations — it’s about rewriting possibilities.”
Bachelor of Science in Chemistry graduate Ms. Galuh Jesslyn Elvaretta and Bachelor of Science in Physics graduate Mr. Ahamed Mohammad Shaarib gave speeches on behalf of their class and shared their precious memories at CityUHK.
The College also took this opportunity to present the College Awards to distinguished alumni and faculty members with outstanding performance in teaching, research and knowledge transfer.
The College of Science Distinguished Alumni Awards 2024/25 were presented to Prof. Jingchen Monika Hu from the Department of Mathematics, and Prof. Shan Guangcun from the Department of Physics.
Prof. Maria Babak from the Department of Chemistry was awarded the College of Science Teaching Excellence Awards 2024/25. Prof. Yudai Matsuda from the Department of Chemistry has received the College of Science Outstanding Young Researcher Award 2024/25.
The College of Science Outstanding Knowledge Transfer and Impact Awards 2024/25 go to Prof. Qi Liu and Prof. Zonglong Zhu from the Department of Physics and Department of Chemistry.
After the Commencement ceremony, faculty members, guests and graduates all gathered in front of the backdrops for toasting and photo-taking to celebrate the joy of graduation together.
The College wishes all graduates a fruitful future!
