Applying knowledge learnt in university to help the needy is meaningful. Mr. Alvin Wijaya, a fresh graduate of the Department of Mathematics achieved this and completed the CityU X Sino Grand Challenges Scholars Program (CityU X Sino GCSP) in May 2022 with Gold Award under the patronage of Sino Group. Professor Daniel Ho, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Education) of the College of Science and a mentor who contributed to setting up the Program at CityU in 2016, was delighted to present the award to Alvin.
CityU X Sino GCSP is a program initiated by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) in the US, prepares students to apply knowledge for the needs of society, especially in areas such as sustainability, health, security, and joy of living, through five key components: research experience, interdisciplinary curriculum, entrepreneurship, global dimension, and service-learning. Alvin took part in improvement works for sewage systems through an international charitable organisation. He found the program helped him build an all-round learning framework and develop social awareness and soft skills to further enhance his development and career as a future scientist.
“The opportunity offered by the Program is interdisciplinary. I am aware of how engineering solutions may contribute to social issues like containing infectious diseases and rehabilitating disabilities. I also have the chance to integrate my computational techniques into engineering knowledge to solve problems related to infrastructure under the guidance of professional engineers,” he revealed in a recent interview by the University.
