After delivering online for three years owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the fifth Science Summer Camp was resumed face-to-face and successfully held on the CityU campus in Hong Kong on 10-15 July 2023.
The signature event of the College of Science attracted more than 1,300 enthusiastic applicants across all the continents, of which 52 campers who studied in Mainland China, Germany, Russia, Singapore, Vietnam, the UK, and Hong Kong, were accepted to join following a rigorous review and selection by our four academic departments.
The Science Summer Camp is designed to offer outstanding prospective PhD candidates to experience student life at CityU and to get a taste of our excellent research education in science. During the days in CityU, an array of activities was arranged for our campers, which included visits to our state-of-the-art research facilities, campus tour, 40+ departmental research seminars by our faculty members, meetings with current PhD students, and information talks on research education opportunities at the Departments of Biostatistics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. Participants were also given a chance to be interviewed by their prospective supervisors for future admission. Apart from academic-related activities, participants have also had a taste of the Hong Kong local culture and heritage through outings to various parts of the city.
At the welcoming ceremony, Professor Raymond Chan, Dean of the College of Science, highlighted in his opening remarks that Hong Kong is a strategic location that connects with half of the world in 5 hours flight(s). The established international network makes Hong Kong and CityU, which is situated at the heart of the city, an ideal destination for students pursuing research education. CityU is also top in the world for its highly internationalised profile of students from 68 countries. Professor Robert Li, Associate Dean of Chow Yei Ching School of Graduate Studies, and Professor Kenneth Leung, Associate Dean (Research and Postgraduate Education) of the College, shared with participants the exciting opportunities and support that CityU offers to our PhD students and what makes CityU an ideal destination for students with an aspiration to embark on their PhD studies.
The next Science Summer Camp will be open for applications in early 2024. Interested students are encouraged to stay tuned with us for more information.
