A "marriage of art and technology" is how Professor Horace Ip describes Body-Brush, a new tool that transforms body movements into real-time three-dimensional (3D) paintings. Professor Ip, Chair Professor of Computer Science and Head of CityU's Department of Computer Science, developed the innovative computer-based motion analysis system in collaboration with CityU's School of Creative Media (SCM) and Hong Kong artist Mr Hay Young.

In a rare display of talent, three CityU scientists-all chair professors-have been newly admitted to the elite of IEEE fellowship (photos below, from left): Professor Paul Chu, from the Department of Physics and Materials Science, Professor Ron Hui and Professor Luk Kwai-man, both from the Department of Electronic Engineering. In the latest round of the IEEE election, only nine new 2003 Fellows, all academics, are from Hong Kong.
By the end of our five-year AURORA strategic plan in 2002, the staff, students, and alumni had completely turned around the fortunes of City University of Hong Kong. According to an Asiaweek survey in 2000, City University's rank among Asian universities jumped from 50 to 27, indicating a quantum leap in the University's teaching, research, facilities, as well as staff and student quality.
In a bold and audacious stroke that cuts a wide swathe across the whole institution, the President Professor H K Chang announced on 25 October a reshuffle of the University's senior management structure and line-up, effective from 1 December.
A new chapter in CityU's development was opened on 25 November, when Council endorsed the University's 2003 to 2008 strategic plan: Meeting the Challenge of Change.
Five CityU teachers have made their mark this year. The 2002 Teaching Excellence Awards (TEA) winners were selected on the virtue of their teaching skills, promotion of the University's teaching culture and the ability to keep students up-to-date in their subject areas, said Professor K S Chiang, Panel Chair of the TEA Scheme and Associate Head of the Department of Electronic Engineering.
Dear Colleagues, You will have heard by now about University Council's resolution on 25 November on the Report of the Independent Committee on Review of Recent Events in the School of Law (IC).
The 17th Congregation marked a new chapter in the lives of this year's 6,864 graduates. Upon their shoulders rests the future, and CityU's President Professor H K Chang reminded them in his address, "You cannot plot out your life's story and anything is possible." He said, "With hard work and determination you can succeed in anything you do and go anywhere you choose. The future is yours." (Please turn to page 8 for the full text of the President's address.)
