University President Professor H K Chang outlined the big picture and CityU's future direction at the University Development Forum, 25 May, in the Wei Hing Theatre packed with some 300 staff members and students. While a projected shortfall in budgetary position in 2008-09 exists, according to Professor Chang the University shows encouraging potential to make ends meet through its self-financing programmes.
Dear Colleague, On 1 May, a few members of the Council and the Management gathered in the Board Room of the Cheng Yick-chi Building for a special meeting on some work at hand.
On 10 May the University Grants Committee (UGC) made an announcement concerning the Academic Development Proposals (ADPs) submitted by the eight UGC-funded institutions for the 2005-08 triennium. CityU’s proposal to make creative media a growth / priority area was endorsed. Out of the 840 second year intake top-up places that UGC allocated to the eight institutions, CityU received 210 places, the second largest number.
Three hundred students and guests applauded the slogan "Reading for fun, I'll do it", at the Opening Ceremony of "World Book Day" and "2004 Hong Kong Reading Month" on 23 April at CityU's University Circle. The Ceremony was co-organized by CityU, RTHK Radio 1, the Hong Kong Publishing Federation, Hong Kong Education City, The Hong Kong Association of Youth Groups, and Hong Kong Public Libraries (Leisure and Cultural Services Department).
On 20 April 2004, Professor H K Chang, University President, together with CityU's Deputy President and two vice-presidents, met with 17 student representatives, led by Mr Kelvin Chan, President of the Students' Union, to exchange views on the issue of "deep collaboration" between CityU and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU).
Dear Colleagues, At the end of March, I led a CityU delegation to Shanghai. The visit came in response to an invitation extended to us in 2002 from Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). It was delayed due to SARS and other circumstances last year. The trip proved to be both inspiring and sobering.
On the morning of 17 March, Professor H K Chang, President, extended a gracious welcome to a delegation of special guests from the Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of China in the Hong Kong Special Administration Region led by Commissioner Mr Yang Wenchang; other members include Ms Jiang Qin, Director-General (Department of International Organizations and Conferences); and Mr Tian Qi, Deputy Director of the Office of MFA.
Dear Colleagues, At the end of my letter to you on 23 February on the funding scenarios for the higher education sector in 2005-08, I pledged: "Together with my senior colleagues, I'll strive to manage the process of budget reduction with priority on upholding the quality of the education we offer and maintaining the stability of our staff." I recently met with the newly elected officers of the Staff Association and reiterated to them our dual priorities.
A delegation of Consuls-General representing Australia, Belgium, Korea, Russia and Turkey paid a visit to CityU on 25 February and were greeted by Professor H K Chang, President, and other faculty members .
Dear Colleagues, Our new role statement, given to us by the University Grants Committee (UGC) in early January, states unequivocally that CityU "actively pursues deep collaboration in its areas of strength with other higher education institutions in Hong Kong, or the region, or more widely."
